Day 2

Southern Arizona borderlands students had their daily check in at 8:30 a.m. on the Borderlands Restoration Campus met with a special guest: German! Students then drove through the San Rafael valley, where they visited and ate lunch at a historic school German’s great-great grandparents created. Then, students took a short walk to the border wall between Southern Arizona and Mexico where they learned about the policies and culture around immigration and how it’s progressed throughout the last few decades. Finally, students stopped at a local named Jeff’s property, where he talked to students about the history of minors in Patagonia and the once-booming mining industry which faded out over time.

Day 1: Travel Day

Today we embarked on our journey to Southern Arizona starting with an early morning and easy flight to Tucson. The plane ride involved sleeping, reading, crossword puzzles, and much more. After we landed we met our Where There Be Dragons instructors Kesh and Vincent who gave us a background on Southern Arizona. When we all got in our trailer and van, we headed to Patagonia. In Patagonia, we got all situated in our living arrangements and then met for dinner made by a local resident of Patagonia. Dinner was followed by a wrap-up of our day and the itinerary for the rest of our trip which involves some really exciting experiences. We will write more again tomorrow!

Introducing the Southern Arizona blog

Southern Arizona (SAZ) Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Borderlands SAZ blog. Its primary purpose is for students to relay highlights, thoughts, and reflections about the trip in words and photos. Intended as a one-way communication, it will be written on most days by two students selected on a rotating basis. On occasion, I or trip leaders might post entries as well.

With that in mind:

Students, please accept the "author" invitation that was emailed to you this afternoon.

Parents, please bookmark this page for easy reference.*

We look forward to seeing all students in Stent Ballroom at 9:00 am on Monday, March 22.
